حفاظًا مني على أمانة العلم التي كان- طيب الله ثراه- من أحرص الناس عليها، وقد كان لي في ذلك نعم القدوة؛ لم أبدل شيئًا مما انتهينا إليه معًا في تقويمها وجلائها.
وأقول ما قلته في مقدمة الطبعة الثالثة للمفضليات: إن ما قد يعن لي من تعليق ضروري أو استدراك، فإني أفرده في نهاية النسخة منسوبًا إلي.
وقد أضفت في هذه النسخة إلى الفهارس التي كانت من بعض نصيبي في العمل المشترك- فهرسًا هامًا وجدته لا مندوحة عنه في فهارس دواوين الشعر، هو فهرس الألفاظ اللغوية الواردة في الشعر.
وقد اقتضى تغيير الحروف في هذه الطبعة أن تتغير أرقام صفحات الطبعة الأولى لذلك حرصت على أن أدل على تلك الأرقام بأرقام جانبية هي الأرقام المعروفة اليوم بالافرنجية، وهي الأرقام العربية الأصيلة التي أخذها الافرنج عن عرب الأندلس والمغرب، ولا تزال مستعملة عند أهل المغرب إلى يومنا هذا. وإنما أثبت هذه الأرقام لتيسير الانتفاع بالإشارات التي أشير بها في أبحاث العلماء إلى طبعتنا الأولى.
