تتناول تلك الدراسة خطأ الدارسين الغربيين لما يعنونه بالعصور الوسطى الإسلامية، وبيان أن العصور الوسطى في أوروبا والتي اتسمت بالظلامية والتخلف كانت تقابلها حضارة إسلامية ملأ السمع والبصر في تلك الفترة، وأنه من الظلم وعدم الحيادية بمكان أن يعمم الدارسون مصطلح "العصور الوسطى" على كل من أوروبا وإمبراطورية الإسلام في تلك الفترة الزمنية تحديدًا، يقول الكاتب:
«لقد تعلمنا أن نزن المصطلحات التي نستخدمها في الحديث عن الناس والثقافات بحساسية أكبر، الكثير من الأوصاف القديمة مثل "زنجي" أو "المحمديين" يتم الآن تجنبها وبدقة، ومع ذلك فإن مصطلح "العصور الوسطى الإسلامية" غير قابل للنقاش إلى حدٍّ كبير، على الرغم من أن "مارشال هودجسون" قد شكك به في السبعينيات وبشكل تأسيسي، لكن ماذا يعني مصطلح "العصور الوسطى الإسلامية"؟ وما هي آثاره على إدراكنا للثقافات الإسلامية في فترة ما قبل الحداثة؟ وأية نتائج يتركها على الدراسات الحضارية المقارنة؟».
ويرى الكاتب أن الصورة الغربية عن الإسلام "في العصور الوسطى" في حاجة إلى الإصلاح. حيث أنه لقرون طويلة كانت المدن القديمة في الشرق تزخر بمظاهر الحضارة النابضة بالحياة في المكتبات والمساجد والدور الفسيحة ذات الحمامات وغيرها من المباني الحجرية الكبيرة، بينما سقطت الحضارة في أوروبا تحت الأنقاض وحظائر الخنازير.
فالأزمنة الحضارية الكلاسيكية كاليونانية والرومانية القديمة والتي كافحتها المسيحية طويلًا على اعتبار أنها حضارات وثنية الدلالة، جرى قبول مواريثها الثقافية والعلمية والحضارية لدى المسلمين، وبلورها المسلمون لتتناسب مع معتقداتهم الدينية، وتطورت بشكل هائل، بدأ نقله وانتقاله إلى أوروبا في القرن الثاني عشر وربما قبل ذلك.
هذه الاستمرارية الحضارية ظهرت آثارها في كل شيء: العمارة، وسكّ النقود، وبناء المساجد، وأنظمة الري، وبحوث الفلك والإسطرلاب، والطب، والهندسة، وحتى التفكير الديني والبحث اللغوي والأدبي.
