قد يكون موضوع الذاكرة الجمعيّة من أكثر التحدّيات صعوبةً لوعي محدود وفرديّ في زمن الموت الكثيف والمتسارع، زمنٍ، ليس الإندثار والفوات فيه إندثاراً وفواتاً هضمهما التاريخ بعد حين ووعاهما، ولكنّهما في طور الحصول، تصعب الإحاطة بهما.
من هنا، تأتي أهمّيّة أعمالٍ تُعنى بحفظ الذاكرة على إختلافاتها المادّيّة واللاماديّة، وتعنى كذلك بالجانب النظري لموضوع الذاكرة الجمعيّة، الكتاب قابلٌ للتصنيف ضمن علوم الفلسفة وعلوم الإجتماع على السواء، أسلوبه ومنهجيته لا يندرجان ضمن الأسلوب والمنهجية الجامعية البحثية؛ هو أقرب ما يكون إلى المقالة الفلسفية الطويلة مع كثافة في الملاحظات المعاشة والمنقولة عبر شهادات كتّاب ومؤرّخين، إلخ...
إضافة إلى ذلك، في الكتاب تتداخل السياسة مع التاريخ والأنثروبولوجيا وعلم النفس.
تتحدّث السيرة الذاتيّة لهالبواش عن رجلٍ شجاع صاحب مبدأ، لم يتوانَ عن إعلان موقفه في قضية دريفوس الشهيرة على سبيل المثال، دون خشية من العواقب، درس في المدرسة العليا لإعداد المعلّمين، وكان من تلاميذ دوركايم ومن مؤسّسي تيّارات الدراسات الإجتماعيّة الفرنسية، كتب أطروحات عن الحياة العمّالية والأطر الإجتماعيّة ومسألة الإنتحار، ويعود الفضل له في إجتراح مفهوم الذاكرة الجمعيّة.
درّس الفلسفة في ثانويات فرنسية في مدن مختلفة، ثمّ في الجامعات الفرنسية، ودرّس كذلك كأستاذ زائر في ألمانيا وفي شيكاغو بالولايات المتحدة، وعيّن رئيساً للمعهد الفرنسي للعلوم الإجتماعيّة، رُحّل إلى معسكرات الإعتقال النازية وتوفّي هناك إثر إصابته بإلتهاب الأمعاء في عام 1945.
