اسم الكتاب أصول السُّنة لم ينفرد بها الإسم وحده بل وجدت كتب كثيرة بهذا الإسم منها أصول السُّنة للحافظ الحُميدي شيخ الإمام البخاري رحمهما الله.
الأصول جمع أصل والأصل: "هو ما يتفرع عنه غيره وما يعتمد عليه غيره" والأصل يشبه القاعدة وهي: "جملة إعتقاد السلف المبنية على الكتاب والسنّة والذي لا يجوز مخالفته".
هذا الكتاب قد شَمل إعتقاد أهل السُّنة جملةً وتفصيلاً بل شَملَ أصولها وقواعدها وأسسها، ظاهر تراجم الإمام أحمد رحمه الله تقول: إن هذه الأصول كتبها بيده فهذا أوثق لأن بعض تراجم عبدوس رحمه الله فيا أنَّ الإمام أحمد كتبها إليه.
