فظهر منهج الإسناد في رواية الحديث والسنّة، ونشأت دراسات عميقة في منهج الرواية، والجرح والتعديل، ونقد الرجال، وصنّفت العديد من الكتب في هذا الصدد كما صنّفت كتب تتضمن قواعد لمنهج البحث في مسائل العلوم المختلفة، منها منهجية علم التاريخ عند المسلمين، ومنهجية الطبقات، والسير والتراجم، وتصنيف الكتب، ومنها مصنّف الإمام النووي في "تهذيب الأسماء واللغات" الذي تناولنا فيه منهجه وموارده، فوجدناه بحق حريصاً ملتزماً بالصدق، والأمانة في جمع المعلومات وتدوينها، فكانت موضع إعجاب وتقدير، فقد اتسمت بالشمولية من حيث الزمان والمكان، فقدّمت صورة مضيئة كاملة عن مضامين الكتاب وموارده، واقتباساته، وإحالاته، فكانت له اهتمامات بالسند وعدالة رجاله، فحظيت كتبه بالثقة والأمانة.
