إن كتاب المجتهدين من كتاب " تلخيص التقريب" هو لأبي المعالي الحويني أحد علماء الإسلام الأفذاذ الذي عرف بطول باعه في فن أصول الفقه بكتابه المطبوع المشهور بالبرهان كما أنه ألف مختصراً في أصول الفقه سماه "الورقات" كما أنه من أئمة علم الكلام وله فيه المصنفات العظيمة كالإرشاد والعقيدة النظامية والشامل وقد ضرب في كل فن من فنون الشريعة بسهم.
ويكتسب الكتاب أهمية أخرى حيث أنه كما يظهر من اسمه يعتمد اعتماداً كلياً على كتاب "التقريب" بل هو تلخيص له. وكتاب "التقريب" للقاضي أبي بكر الباقلاني المتوفى سنة 403هـ، وقد جمع القاضي الباقلاني في كتابه "التقريب" شتات علم أصول الفقه بعد أن كان من سبقوه من العلماء يصنفون في مواضيع من علم أصول الفقه ولا يستوفون مباحثه ومسائله. والقاضي الباقلاني هو بحر العلوم الزاخر الآخذ بناصية البيان ومرسي قواعد الحجاج والمناظرات وعلم الكلام على طريقة أبي الحسن الأشعري والمنافح عن عقائد الإسلام في زمانه. وحيث أن كتاب "التقريب" لا يعرف مكانه حتى الآن فالمصدر الأعظم لآراء القاضي أبي بكر الباقلاني هو هذا الكتاب.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه الدكتور عبد الحميد أبو زنيد وعمل على مقابلة نسخه لإخراجه في ثوب جديد يستفيد به القارئ.
