يعدُّ موضوع إستقلالية البنوك المركزية من المواضيع التي تحظى بأهمية كبيرة في الدراسات الإقتصادية، لا سيما المالية والمصرفية وذلك لأهمية الدور الذي تؤديهِ البنوك المركزية في عملية تحقيق الإستقرار الإقتصادي عموماً والنقدي على وجه الخصوص، كما ويتفق بعض الخبراء الإقتصاديين على أن إستقلالية البنك المركزي هدف مرغوب فيه، لأنه يساعد في الحفاظ على مستوى الأسعار على المدى الطويل.
كما أن المزيد من إستقلالية البنك المركزي تؤدي إلى المزيد من الفاعلية والمصداقية في مواجهة مشكلة التضخم، وذلك لأن الإستقلالية تجعل البنك المركزي حراً في رسم وتنفيذ سياسته النقدية دون خضوعه للإعتبارات أو التدخلات السياسية، ولكن هذا لا يمنع أن يكون ثمّةً إتفاق بين البنك المركزي (السياسة النقدية) ووزارة المالية (السياسة المالية) على هذه الأهداف، ذلك لأن البنك لا يبحث عن الإستقلالية في تحديد الأهداف وإنما الإستقلالية في إنتهاج الأدوات المناسبة لبلوغ تلك الأهداف.
