تفنن المحدثون في تدوين الحديث وما يتصل به من علوم كما أبدعوا في وضع الكتب والأجزاء والرسائل صوناً للسلسلة لإسناد ومن كتبهم هذه أما يسمة بالأوائل، إذ اصطلح الحدثون المتأخرون أن يوردوا في جزء الأحاديث الأوائل من عدة كتب يختارونها بهدف تعريف الطالب الحديثي بأسمائها وطرف من أحاديثها وهو أقل ما ينبغي للطالب الحديثي أن يتعلمه.
ومن فوائد هذه الكتب الدلالة على أسماء الكتب المعروفة المهمة ومؤلفيها، وزيادة التعريف بها بذكر أوائلها فكبت الأوائل خطوة أولى لتوسيع أفق الطالب في العلوم والمعارف وتلأوائل السنبلية للعلامة محمد سعيد بن محمد سنبل المكي الشافعي المتوفي بالطائف سنة 1175، ذكر في أولها أنه رأى أوائل لبعض الأعلام طول فيها، فاراد أن يلخص مما ذكر فيها أول حديث من أول كتاب تاركاً لباقيه بهدف الاختصار.
وقد اعتنى المحقق بهذا الكتاب ضبطاً وتنسيقاً معتمداً على نسخة من طبعة مكة المكرمة، قابلها بنسخة الشيخ محمد عباس بن محمد سعيد، سنبل، فعمد إلى تصحيح الأصل والذيل من الأخطاء والتصحيفات والتحريفات التي اعترت أسانيدها ومتونها وذلك بمراجعة مصادرهما وبالرجوع إلى كتب أسماء الرجال والتراجم. كما ترجم للشيخ محمد سعيد سنبل ترجمة وجيزة.
وقد قام المعتني بإخراج الكتاب بقراءته ومزيد تصحيحه وإدراج شيء من التعليق عليه مع التوسع في ترجمة المؤلف ومقابلته على النسخة الأزهرية، وأدرج في آخر الكتاب نماذج للإجازة لمن أحب أن يقرأه على المشايخ للإجازة.
