عقد أبو الفتح ابن جني باب سماه: "باب في الرد على من ادعى على العرب عنايتها بالألفاظ وإغفال المعاني" بدأه بقوله "اعلم أن هذا الباب من أشرف فصول العربية، وأكرمها، وأعلاها، وأنزهها. وإذا تأملته عرفت منه وبه ما يؤنقك، ويذهب في الإستحسان له كل مذهب بك. وذلك أن العرب كما تعني بألفاظها فتصلحها وتهذبها وتراعيها، وتلاحظ أحكامها، بالشعر تارة، وبالخطب أخرى، وبالأسجاع التي تلتزمها وتتكلف استمرارها، فإن المعاني أقوى عندها، وأكرم عليها، وأفخم قدراً في نفوسها... فإذا رأيت العرب قد أصلحوا ألفاظها وحسنوها، وحموا حواشيها وهذبوها، وصقلوا عزوبها وأرهفوها، فلا ترين أن العناية إذ ذاك إنما هي بالألفاظ، بل هي عندنا خدمة منهم للمعاني، وتنويه، وتشريف".
فهذا نص جيد يرينا أن شيوخ النحو الأولين حين كانوا يستخرجون قواعده إنما كانوا يستخرجون أصول هذه السليقة نفسها، ويحللونها ويصيرونها هي نفسها قواعد علمية اقتنصها النحاة- من بين اللفظ ومعناه- بمهارة مدهشة، ونسقوها في منظوماتهم، وهذا هو جلال هذا النحو، وهذا سر امتلائه وخصوبته...... ومن ثم فقد عزم لي- بعد استخارة المولى عز وجل- أن أتقدم ببحث لنيل درجة التخصص (الماجستير) يلم بطرف من هذه القضية، ويحاول الإجابة عن هذا السؤال: هل النحو صناعة لفظية؟ وهل النحاة قوم لفظيون؟ فكان هذا البحث: (بين الصناعة النحوية والمعنى عند السمين الحلبي في كتابه الدر المصون في علوم الكتاب المكنون).
