قال حاجي خليفة في كشف الظنون: مختصر المزني في فروع الشافعية، وهو أحد الكتب الفقهية الخمس المشهورة بين الشافعية التي يتداولونها أكثر تداول، وهي سائرة في كل الأمصار كما ذكره النووي في التهذيب. ويعد الشيخ إسماعيل بن يحيى المزني الشافعي المتوفي سنة 264هـ، من أول من صنف في مذهب الشافعي، وفي هذا قال ابن سريج: تخرج مختصر المزني من الدنيا عند راد، وعلى منواله رتبوا ولكلامه فسروا وشرحوا، والشافعية عاكفون عليه ودارسون له ومطالعون به دهراً. ثم كانوا بين شارح مطول ومختصر معلل، والجمع منهم معترف أنه لم يدرك من حقائقه غير اليسير كابن سريج.

والمزني هو أبو إبراهيم إسماعيل بن يحيى بن إسماعيل المصري صاحب الشافعي من ربيع الأول وهو في عشر التسعين، وعرف عنه الزهد، والورع، وحكي عنه أنه كان إذا فاتته الجماعة صلى منفرداً خمساً وعشرين مرة، ولم يتقدم عليه أحد من أصحاب الشافعي، وهو الذي تولى غسله يوم مات، قيل: وعاونه الربيع، ودفن إلى جنبه بالقرافة الصغرى.

كتاب في الفقه، وهو أحد الكتب الخمس المشهورة بين الشافعية التي يتداولونها أكثر تداول وهي سائرة في كل الأمصار . والشافعية عاكفون عليه دارسون له ومطالعون به دهرا، ثم كانوا بين شارح مطول ومختصر معلل، والجمع منهم معترف أنه لم يدرك من حقائقه غير اليسير منهم . وجاء الكتاب محققا زيادة في التوثيق والفائدة.
