يتناول هذا الكتاب فترة مهمة لا بتألقها، بل بالضعف التدرجي للخلافة العباسية بين القرنين الثالث والسادس للهجرة، ولا يفترض في دولة عظمى أن تنهار فجأة أو في فترة قصيرة، بل إن ذلك يتطلب وقتاً، ولا يخلو من أوقات صعود نسبي. وهذا ما حصل للخلافة العباسية منذ تسليط الجند الأتراك في الجيش أولاً، ثم في الإدارة والحياة العامة في فترة سامراء بعد اغتيالهم للمتوكل.
وهكذا فقد سعى مؤلف هذا الكتاب لتناول التطورات في بلاد الخلافة في المشرق منذ ظهور الإمارات الفارسية الأولى حتى نهاية الفترة السلجوقية. ولم يتعرض للإمارات والدول في البلاد غرب بادية الشام، ولعله محق في ذلك للترابط الواضح بين وضع الخلافة والإمارات والدول التي ظهرت في بلاد المشرق.
لقد تناول المؤلف أقطاراً عدة من العراق إلى ما وراء النهر، وفترة تناهز الثلاثة قرون. وحاول أن يكتب بمنهج تاريخي، وأن يوثق –بعناية- ما يكتب. وقد ظهرت دراسات تفصيلية بعده تهتم بجانب أو آخر من هذه الفترة، ولكنه يبقى متفرداً بالشمول مكاناً وزماناً، مما يبقي لدراسته قيمة وجدوى.
لقد تناول المؤلف فترة الوعي الإيراني بعد الفتح الإسلامي، وهي فترة تكوين إمارات ودول إيرانية، وبدايات الأدب الفارسي الحديث بعد الإسلام شعراً ونثراً. ومع أن السلاجقة (من الترك) استولوا على إيران، إلا أن رجال الإدارة والثقافة كانوا في الغالب إيرانيين.
وإذا كانت الفترة فترة قلق وتجزئة، فإنها كانت فترة ازدهار ثقافي في القرنين الثالث والرابع للهجرة، وفترة ازدهار المدرسة وتوسع دورها في القرنين الرابع والخامس.
