يتناول الكتاب جانباً من سياسة الملك فاروق التي تبناها حيث كان التيار الإسلامي يحتل مكانته السياسية لمواجهة القوى الوطنية باتجاهاتها الليبرالية وفي مقدمتها الوفد، إلى جانب تعزيز علاقاته بالدول الإسلامية، ومن ثم جاء تبني فاروق الدعوة للخلافة الإسلامية لتحقيق مكاسب سياسية. وقد استند فاروق لتنفيذ سياسته على المؤسسة الدينية، حيث لعب الأزهر برئاسة شيخه المراغي دوراً بارزاً في الترويج لمسألة الخلافة، وقد أسهم ذلك في تعزيز الروابط بين القصر والأزهر.
كما لاقت الدعوة لمسألة الخلافة تأييداً من جانب جماعة الإخوان المسلمين برئاسة الشيخ حسن البنا الذي ساند خطى الملك تحت إعلاء كلمة الدين حيث أخذ على عاتقه مهمة تعبئة الرأي العام ولفت نظره إلى خطوات فاروق الدينية، كما أسهم حزب مصر الفتاة في هذا المجال. على هذا النحو كان القصر قادراً على استغلال التيار الإسلامي بتأييد من الأزهر والإخوان المسلمين ومصر الفتاة لتحقيق مكاسبه السياسية من خلال مشروع الخلافة الإسلامية. وعلى الرغم من معارضة بريطانيا لموضوع الخلافة الإسلامية بهدف منع تشكيل تكتل إسلامي مضاد للقوى الأوروبية، فقد أسهمت الدعوة للخلافة الإسلامية إلى تقليص نفوذ معارضي الملك فاروق في الداخل واراتفاع رصيده الشعبي، وتدعيم مركزه في العالم الإسلامي، فضلاً عن تهيئة الأجواء لمشروع الوحدة العربية كبديل عن الخلافة الإسلامية.
