تباينت القراءات من حيث أداؤها في جوانبها المختلفة؛ الصوتية والصرفية والنحْوية والدلالية؛ مما جعلها ميداناً فسيحاً للدارسين؛ للوقوف على صُوَر هذا الإختلاف وتوجيهه، في ضوء معطيات الدرس اللغوي.
وجاءت هذه الدراسة لتناقش جانباً من ذلك، وهو المستوى الصوتي في إختلاف القراءات؛ لتقف على جوانب الإختلاف بين القراءات، وقصَرَتْها على القراءات السبعة، وقيّدَتْها بكتاب "السبعة" لأبي بكر ابن مجاهد البغدادي (ت 324هـ)؛ لما عُرف عنه من سَعة العلم.
وقد ألّف عدداً من الكتب في علم القراءات، منها كتاب "السبعة في القراءات"، وهو الذي دارت عليه هذه الدراسة؛ حيث قصر القراءة على سبعة من القُرّاء، ونظراً لسّعة الموضوع، وغزارة مادته، فقد اقتصرت هذه الدراسة على جزء (عمَّ).
وجاءت دراسة الموضوع في ستة فصول، الأول لمناقشة الإبدال، والثاني لظاهرة الإمالة، والثالث لظاهرة الإدغام؛ والرابع لظاهرة الإشباع؛ والخامس لظاهرة القلب المكاني؛ والسادس لأحكام الهمزة من حيث التحقيق والتخفيف، وصور ذلك في القراءات السبع، وتعليقات العلماء عليها.
