حازت الكتابة العربية مكانةً بالغة الأهمية بين غيرها من الكتابات والخطوط التي انتشرت وتطورت في مناطق متفرقة من أنحاء العالم، وإنك أيها القارئ لتسمع عن تلك المدارس التعليمية التي أنشئت خصيصاً في بعض الدول العربية - ولم تزل بعد قائمةً تزاول أنشطتها التعليمية والفنية - من أجل العناية بتدريس الخط العربي وتحسين صناعة الكتابة وتجويدها، يوم أن كانت تلك الصناعة لها من المكانة والرفعة ما لها، فنبغ في صناعتها وفي تجويد الخط العربي خطاطون مبرزون، حفظ لنا التاريخُ العربي أخبارهم وإسهاماتهم وإبداعاتهم الفنية العديدة في هذا المنحى، بحيث لم يقتصر الإهتمام بالخط العربي وتجويده والعناية به وإتقانه على فئة معينة من الناس، وإنما قد أدلى السلاطينُ والأمراءُ والوزراءُ ورجالاتُ الدولة الإسلامية يدلوهم في هذا الأمر، وخاصةً في عصر الدولة العثمانية التي اشتهر عن سلاطينها أنهم يحرصون على تعلم الخط ولهم في هذا ذوق ملموس، هذا لمن قرأ التاريخ وتنقل بين أركانه وجنباته، مستبصراً مستنيراً.
أراد الكاتب أن يسلط الضوء على بعض القضايا العلمية المتصلة بالمخطوط العربي نشأةً وتطوراً ورفاهيةً، بإعتباره مؤشراً واضح الدلالة على تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية وتقبلها في الزمان والمكان، منذ بداية عصر التدوين وحتى إختراع الطباعة.
هذا بإعتبار أن كلاً من علم الخطوط أو الباليوجرافيا وعلم المخطوطات أو الكوديكولوجيا من بين العلوم المساعدة لعلم الآثار أو الأركيولوجيا.
