يعد كتاب "ذيل تاريخ دمشق" لابن القلانسي مصدراً أولياً لابن الأثير عن تاريخ الحرب الصليبية المبكرة على بلاد الشام، وعلى الرغم من ذلك حاول ابن الأثير أن يوظف خبرته التاريخية بإعتباره مؤرخاً من القرن السادس الهجري/ الثاني عشر الميلادي، وحاول بذلك أن يبلور أو يبني صورة جديدة عن الفرنج في بلاد الشام وفقاً للمعطيات الجديدة السائدة في عصره.
بالمقابل فإن ابن القلانسي لم يملك هذا التصور كون أن العصر الذي عاش فيه كان يمثل بدايات الحروب الصليبية على بلاد الشام، فعامل الصليبيين معاملة أي عدو طارئ على بلاد الشام، فكانت مهمته الاولى هي تدوين الأحداث وفق المعايير التي يمتلكها الموظف الذي يعمل في وظيفة كاتب الإنشاء، إذ إن طبيعة المهنة التي يمارسها تتطلب منه أن يكتب ما يملى عليه فقط، لكنه يبقى مصدراً أولياً عن تاريخ الحروب الصليبية المبكرة خصوصاً الحملة الصليبية الثانية.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى بتحقيقه الأستاذ عارف عبد الغني حيث قام بفهرسة الكتاب فهرسة شاملة تتضمن الأعلام، والأماكن، والمصطلحات، وألفاظ الحضارة، بحيث تم فهرسة كل كلمة تدل على معنى، حتى يكون القارئ على إطلاع على كل مفردة من مفردات الكتاب.
