يعد كتاب الفوائد الغراء من تهذيب «سير أعلام النبلاء» خلاصة مستوعبة للكتابِ الذهبيِّ «سير أعلام النبلاء»، وعصارة لأهم أخباره وحوادثه، وتقييد منهجي مبتكر لغرر فوائده، فكان فرعاً طيباً لأصله الباسق الذي هو من أبرز وأهم كتب التاريخ المعنية بالترجمات والسير، والحافلة بأخبار مترجميها على عدة نواحٍ.
جاء هذا الكتاب نهاية القول بعد أن قام الدكتور الشيخ محمد بن حسن الشريف باختصار «السير» في كتاب سماه: «نزهة الفضلاء تهذيب سير أعلام النبلاء» فقدَّم للكتاب خدمة علمية جليلة؛ إذ يسَّر الوصول إلى نمير فوائده بعناوين بارزة، وفهارس مفصلة. وهو يعرض أصله على غير أبواب التراجم، بل بطرق أبواب الفوائد والفرائد، وهذا ابتكار نفيس للوصول إلى درر «سير أعلام النبلاء». وهذه الطريقة في البحث والتنقيب عن الفوائد، وسَمْطِها ضمن عقْدٍ فريد واحد.. ليس بالأمر اليسير، بل هو صعب عسير، وهذه لفتة هامة تبرز مزيَّةً ألمعيةً لـ« الفوائد الغراء».
كما يعد هذا الكتاب مرجعاً طيّباً للبحوث الموضوعية، وشاهداً تاريخياً مُصدَّقاً فيها؛ لما تَحلّى به مؤلفه من مكنة في علم النقد والرجال، وتمحيص الأخبار والأقوال، ولما أجاد به مؤلفه من حسن الجمع والاختيار. وهو كتاب حري بطلبة العلم مطالعته واجتناء عوائده، فكثير من المعلومات النفيسة واللفتات الأدبية اللطيفة قد غابت ضمن مسارح الترجمة والحديث عن أدواء العصر وملامحه ووصفه. وهذا من أهم الأسباب التي دعت دار المنهاج للعناية بالكتاب وإبرازه بهذه الحلة الأنيقة.
