إن كتاب سير أعلام النبلاء للحافظ الذهبي كتاب جليل الشأن عظيم الأهمية، جمع فيه مصنفه سير وتراجم وحوادث شهدتها البلاد الإسلامية، وقد امتاز بسعته وإحاطته ويعد بحق صورة تبين عظمة الحركة الفكرية وتنوعها وغناها في العصور التي غطاها المصنف.
والكتاب مقسم إلى طبقات بدأها بذكر من اشتهر من أوائل القرن الأول الهجري حتى عام 700هـ. وجل أمد كل طبقة عشرين سنة تقريباً وقد ذكر فيه الخلفاء والسلاطين والملوك والأمراء فضلاً عن الوزراء والأدباء والنحاة والشعراء، والفلاسفة والمتكلمين والقراء، والمحدثين، وغيرهم من أهل التقوى والصلاح الذين اشتهروا لدى معاصريهم حتى أربت تراجم هذا الكتاب على ستة آلاف ترجمة.
وقد اعتنى الباحثون بهذا الكتاب القيم وعملوا على نسخة وطبعة غير مرة وفي أكثر من مكان لما له من عظيم القيمة وجليل الأثر وتهذيب سير أعلام النبلاء، وقد أبقى على روح النص الأصلي، لكنه جاء مختصراً، وافياً بمطالب الباحثين الذين يحتاجون إلى ترجمات بسيطة تفي بالغرض، فكان خلاصة لذلك الأثر الجليل، الذي لا يتيسر اقتناؤه للكثيرين. وقد اشرف الشيخ شعيب الأرنؤوط على تحقيق الكتاب، وهذبه أحمد فايز الحمصي الذي أثبت ما اختاره المؤلف من جوامع العلم في التعريف بصاحب الترجمة كذكر نسبه وكنيته وما اشتهر به والشيوخ الذي أخذ عنهم وضمت إلى الكتاب فصول مما اختصره الذهبي من كتب التراجم الأخرى عن الخلفاء والسلاطين والملوك والوزراء، كما أضيفت أكثر من خمسين ترجمة كانت مبثوثة في صفحات الكتاب ولم تأخذ دورها بالبروز في الكتاب وفهارس.
