لم يكن المعجمات التي ألفت قبل الصحاح في درجته إذ جاء معظم ما وضع ناقصاً أو مختصراً كما حوى بعضها مواد مفتعلة لا أصل لها في العربية أو أن ترتيب مواده صعب لا يفيد الباحث ولا يعنيه في الوصول إلى قصده بسهولة. وقد اتجه علماء اللغة ومؤلفي المعجمات إلى العناية بالصحاح والاعتماد عليه إذ رأى فيه البعض أنه أحسن من "الجمهرة" وأوقع من "تهذيب اللغة" وأقرب متناولاً من "مجمل اللغة".
ولا عجب فقد جاء الصحاح آية في فن التأليف المعجمي ابتكر فيه مؤلفه منهجاً جديداً لم يسبق إليه وعد فتحاً في تأليف المعجم العربي سحر الناس وبهرهم فقد رتب الصحاح على حروف المعجم، واعتبار آخر حرف في الكلمة بدلاً من الأول، وجعله الباب للحرف الأخير والفصل للأول. ويذكر في الباب كل كلمة في اللغة وصلن إليه وصحت لديه عروبتها الصحيحة على أن تكون منتهية بحرفه ويوزع الكلمات على الفصول وهي ثمانية وعشرون فصلاً بعدد حروف المعجم كالأبواب.
والباب في الصحاح آخر الكلمة والفصل أولها ماذا أراد باحث كلمة (شرف طرق باب الفاء ونظر في فصل الشين وبعد فإن ما يميز الصحاح أنه خير المعجمات التي سبقته لالتماس الصحيح الذي لا خلاف فيه وسهولة تناوله ومأخذه ويسر البحث فيه.
