يُقدّم منصف المرزوقي، رئيس تونس الأسبق، عصارة تجربته السياسية والفكرية في حوار مطوّل يعود فيه بالقارئ إلى ذكريات طفولته وشبابه الذين أمضاهما بين تونس والمغرب وفرنسا. وإضافة إلى حياته الشخصية، يتحدث المرزوقي بالتفصيل عن مجموعة من الوقائع والأحداث السياسية التي عاشها أو كان فاعلًا فيها انطلاقًا من انخراطه في نضالات الطلبة العرب والأوروبيين خلال دراسته الطب في فرنسا أواخر ستينيات القرن الماضي، ومرورًا بمعارضته سلطوية الرئيس الحبيب بورقيبة ودكتاتورية زين العابدين بن علي، وما تعرّض له جرّاء ذلك من سجن وطرد من وظيفته الجامعية ومراقبة لصيقة من لدن البوليس السياسي، وصولًا إلى اندلاع الثورة التونسية في أواخر عام 2010، ومحاولات الثورة المضادة إفشال التحوّل الديمقراطي. كما يسرد المرزوقي كواليس بعض القرارات التي اتخذها عندما كان رئيسًا للجمهورية. ويشتمل الكتاب أيضًا على دراسة تخص السيرة الفكرية له، انطلاقًا من تحليل كتاباته ومحاضراته.
