يعد الكتاب من الكتب الهامة المصنفة في علم الحديث، ذلك لأنه جزء من كتاب الإمام أحمد "المسند" وهذا الجزء ما تفرد به الإمام، عن أصحاب الكتب الستة، وأن ما جاء في هذا الجزء وهو غاية المقصد في زوائد أحمد لهو من الأحاديث التي انتقاها الإمام أحمد، ويدلي على ذلك كلام ابنه عبد الله أنه كان يضرب على بعض الأحاديث لضعفها، ولقد علق الحافظ الهيتمي على رجال كل حديث فيه، فأظهر مالهم وما عليهم، فزادت قيمة الكتاب، ولقد نهج الهيتمي في كتابه هذا أنه رتبه على أبواب الفقه، فجعل كتباً بلغت خمس وأربعون كتاباً، ثم قسم هذه الكتب إلى أبواب، وقد قدم الحافظ الهيتمي لكتابه هذا بمقدمة صغيرة أوضح فيها منهجه، ثم تلاها بفهرس لكتب ذكر أسماء الكتب حسب ترتيبه لها.
