يتعلق موضوع رسالة الشيخ عواد حسين الخلف بموضوع "روايات المدلسين في صحيح مسلم: جمعها، تخريجها، الكلام عليها"، والتدرليس كما هو معروف أمر خفي دقيق المسالك، لا يكشفه إلا الأئمة الجهابذة المتمرسون في صناعة الحديث.
وقد كان الباحث موفقاً في السير بهذه الرسالة، وكانت شخصيته العلمية بارزة وواضحة في ثنايا البحث، وذلك لأنه لم يكن جماعاً للأقوال والمادة العلمية فحسب، بل كان ناقداً، بصيراً بما يجمع من أقوال الأئمة، فقد أيد وانتقد، ورجح ودلل على الترجيح، وعارض وانتصر، كل ذلك بأسلوب علمي هادئ، وأدب سام مع العلماء وأئمة هذا الفن.
وتكمن أهمية الرسالة في كونها عالجت موضوعاً حساساً شائكاً، طالما تكلم فيه الأقدمون والمعاصرون، ألا وهو: كيف توجد روايات لمدلسين قد عنعنوا، في كتاب التزم مؤلفه إخراج الأحاديث الصحيحة؟" والمعروف أن رواية المدلس إذا عنعن محمولة، على الانقطاع، والانقطاع مخل بصحة الحديث، لأن أول شرط من شروط الحديث الصحيح هو اتصال السند.
وقد أجاب الباحث في رسالته هذه عن هذا الإشكال بأسلوب علمي كاف شاف إن شاء الله، وأزال اللبس الذي يدور في ذهن بعض المشتغلين في الحديث الشريف وعلومه، لا سيما المعاصرين منهم، الذين جرهم هذا اللبس إلى التطاول على الإمام مسلم، وعلى صحيحه الذي تلقته الأمة بالقبول، فراحوا يضعفون أحاديث في صحيح مسلم بناء على أنها من روايات مدلسين بالعنعنة، وغفلوا عن قواعد خاصة قعدها الأئمة في هذا الموضوع، سيراها القارئ في مباحث هذه الرسالة.
