يعدّ كتاب الإمام مالك "الموطأ" من أقدم الأصول التي دوّنت الحديث النبوي الشريف، وهو إلى جانب ذلك، جامع للآثار والسير والفتاوى، لذا فهو يعدّ كتاب حديث وكتاب فقه، فقد ضم مائة حديث سند و222 حديث مرسل، و613 حديث موقوف و285 رأي التابعين. كما أنه ضم إلى جانب ذلك فتاوى العلماء الثقاة.
ولما كان الكتاب بهذه الأهمية فقد اعتنى "باشا معروف" بتحقيقه واضعاً منهجاً جديداً في تخريج أحاديثه وآثاره، يقوم على تتبع من رواه عن الإمام مالك من تلامذته سواء أكانوا من أصحاب الموطآت أن من الرواة الذين رووا عنه خارج "الموطأ"، ورتبهم على حروف المعجم ليسهل الوقوف على كل راو عند الحاجة.
كما واهتم بشرح الألفاظ التربية التي جاءت بالكتاب وبذكر أبرز الفوائد الإسنادية والحديثية التي جاء بها الحافظ أبو عمر ابن عبد البر في كتابه "التمهيد" فصارت هذه الطبعة محتوية على جل الفوائد الرئيسة التي تضمنها المخطوط الأصل.
