تناولت العديد من الدراسات التاريخية القاهرة الفاطمية شارحة دروبها وآثارها.. كان آخرها المقريزي في كتابه" المواعظ والاعتبار بذكر الخطط والآثار" ، ونظرا لتغير معالم المدينة العريقة عما كانت عليه في عصر"المقريزي" قام "على باشا مبارك" بسد هذا الفراغ حيث قدم كتابه هذا في عشرين جزءا تتناول تاريخ القاهرة ومصر منذ العصر الفاطمي. وقد تناول في البداية تاريخ القاهرة ومصر منذ العصر الفاطمي وحتى عصر الخديوي توفيق في مقارنة بين ما كانت عليه وما أصبحت فيه أحياءها الحديثة ، يلى هذا خطط القاهرة وشوارعها وحتى حاراتها مرتبة ترتيبا أبجديا. وكذلك يعرج على مساجدها ومدارسها وزواياها وكنائسها بنفس الترتيب الأبجدي أما بعد هذه النقظة فينتقل إلى خارج القاهرة في أول محطة عند مدينة الأسكندرية ثم باقي الاقاليم والمدن والقرى في ترجمة للأعيان والأدباء والشعراء والأولياء ، لا ينسى أيضا المؤلف الآثار الفرعونية ومقياس نهر النيل منذ عهد الفراعنة وحتى عصر تأليف الكتاب. وأخيرا يتناول النقود بأشكالها وتواريخها وقيمتها مقارنة مع قيم النقد الحديث.
