يعد هذا السفر الجليل عملاً قلَّ أن تجد له نظيراً في هذا العصر الذي فشت فيه الرطانة، واستشرت العجمة، وطغت العولمة بلغتها وثقافتها محاولة طمس عروبتنا وهويتنا، إنه يذكرنا بعصور العربية الخالدة وشيوخها الكبار، ولا يبعد أن تقول: هذا نفسٌ من أبي علي الفارسي، وهذا مثلٌ من ثقافة ابن جني، مروراً بشيوخ العلم في العصر الحديث.
لقد ضمَّ هذا السفر كل أساليب العربية وفنونها، تقرأ في مباحثه النحوية فتقول: هذا سيبويه عصره، وتقرأ دفاعه عنها وحجاجه وصياله مع مدعي الثقافة وأدعياء العلم فتقول: عاد أبو علي، أما التحقيق فتجده في صورته المثلى كما كان عند كبار القوم وأعيان الفن من خدمة للنص، وبسط في حواشيه وبحث عن مصادره، وصبر على أزمة البحث ومحنته.
وقع العمل في ثلاثة أقسام:
القسم الأول: يضم أربع عشرة دراسة ما بين بحوث ودراسات، نجد فيها بصراً كبيراً بالعربية، وفقهاً بأساليبها وتراكيبها، وقولاً فصلاً فيما يجوز ولا يجوز، وإحاطة كبيرة بلغة العرب، ودراسة شاملة عن المصطلح العلمي وأساليب وضعه ووسائل توحيده، ومناقشة لكبار العلماء.
القسم الثاني: يضم ثلاثاً وعشرين دراسة يجمع بينها أنها عرض ونقد لكثير من أمهات كتب التراث ومناقشة لمحققيها ومؤلفيها. وكان بعض من ناقشهم في مصاف أساتذته، لكنه بعلمه الغزير وثقته بنفسه كان يقرع الحجة بالحجة، وصوب كثيراً من الأوهام التي وقع فيها مؤلفو هذه الكتب ومحققوها.
القسم الثالث: وضم تسع رسائل قدم فيها خلاصة علمه وزبدة فكره في الفن الذي برَّز فيه، وفاق أقرانه، وهو تحقيق نصوص التراث، وكل ما قدمه في هذا القسم نصوص أبكار تقدم محققة أول مرة، جاءت على هذا النمط المعجب الرائق الذي يذكرك بشيوخ هذا الفن بني شاكر والنفاخ والسيد صقر وعبد السلام هارون.
