مصنف هذا الكتاب كاتب معروف بالمتانة والدقة وجمال الأسلوب وقوة الحجة، ويمتاز أيضاً بحبه للإصلاح، وبغضه للجمود على كل قديم، وله في المباحث الدينية والرسائل والمحاضرات ما يسمو به إلى منزلة المصلحين، ويعد كتاب إتمام الوفاء في سيرة الخلفاء من أهم مؤلفاته في مجال التراجم وفيه مع المصنف ما تشتت من تاريخ الخلفاء الراشدين في مطولات الكتب، التي يميل القارئ من استفاضتها في طرح الموضوع. وبالرجوع لمضمون الكتاب نجد أنه مقسم إلى قسمين: جاء الأول منهما تحت عنوان اتحاد الكلمة، وفيه تحدث المصنف عن تاريخ الفتوحات الإسلامية في عهد الخليفتين أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنهم جميعاً. واتبع هذا القسم بنبذة في نظامات الأمة الإسلامية إذ ذاك، وسير المسلمين مع بعضهم: من حسن الآخاء والسعي وراء تتميم ما أنبأ به رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) من تعميم الدين الإسلامي في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها. أما القسم الثاني فجاء تحت عنوان في عصر الاختلاف والفتن: وفيه تأريخ لجزء من خلافة عثمان بن عفان، ولخلافة علي بن أبي طالب، ولخلافة معاوية بن أبي سفيان رضي الله عنهم جميعاً. ما ويحتوي هذا القسم على نبذة مختصرة تظهر للمسلمين نتائج الاختلاف والفرقة.
