بين طيات هذا الكتيب تعليق على رسالة "أصول السنة" للإمام أحمد بن حنبل؛ وقد جاء هذا التعليق بالحاشية مضافاً إلى متن نص الرسالة الأصلي، أما عمل المعلق فتجلى بـ: أولاً: قام بنسخ المخطوط ومن ثم مقابلة المنسوخ بالمخطوط؛ ثانياً: عني بالتقديم على الرسالة بمقدمة احتوت على: وصف النسخة المعتمدة في التحقيق، وإثبات صحة نسبة هذه الرسالة إلى الإمام أحمد، ثالثاً: تدوين ترجمة لراوي الرسالة عن الإمام أحمد، وأخرى لمصنف الرسالة الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، رابعا: قام بالتعليق على معظم المسائل الواردة في هذه الرسالة، حتى أتت كالشرح على المتن، وسماها "تمام المنة في التعليق على أصول السنة"، خامساً: قام بتخريج الأحاديث الواردة في الرسالة؛ كما وعني بإصلاح ما وقع في الأصل من خطأ، مشيراً إليه في الحاشية، سادساً: قام بإعداد فهارس علمية وهي: 1-فهرس الأحاديث المرفوعة، 2-فهرس للموضوعات والأبحاث.
