أخذ المسلمون مع كتاب ربهم سنة نبيهم صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث تلقاهما الصحابة من قائدهم ونبيهم صلى الله عليه وسلم، فنقلوها ورووها كما هي إلى تابعيهم، ومنهم إلى تابعي التابعين، ومنه إلى تابعيهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين، لذا تفردت الأمة الإسلامية بفن الإسناد، فكان لها علم الرجال.
والكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته من المؤلفات التي اعتنت بهذا العلم، وقد أراده مؤلفه أحمد بن عبد الله الخرزجي مختصراً في أسماء الرجال مستعيناً على ذلك بما جاء في أمهات الكتب التي صنفت في علم الرجال وهي: تهذيب الحافظ الذهبي، وتقريب الحافظ بن حجر، وإكمال ابن ماكولا، والمؤتلف والإكمال للحافظ عبد الغني المقدسي، والجمع لابن الفضل بن طاهر، والميزان للذهبي. وقد قام المؤلف بضبط ما يحتاج إلى ضبطه في غالب الأحوال، مزيداً عليه زيادات مفيدة، ووفيات عديدة، من الكتب المعتمدة، والنقول المسندة.
