طوال رحلتي مع القصيدة العربيّة، كنت ألحظ أنّ كثيراً من مفسّريها المستشرقين والعرب يهَبون النصّ دلالات بعيدة، فعلاقتهم بالشعر تعتمد على ترجمة المعاني الواردة ترجمة معجميّة، دون استيعاب الواقع الاجتماعي الذي أنتج ذلك الشعر. وظللتُ مأسوراً بما يصلون إليه من نتائج، ومكبلًا بالمسلّمات التي سلّم بها الباحثون بعدهم، مع أنّني أرى تشابهًا واضحًا بين القصيدة العربية والواقع الاجتماعي الذي تعيشه الجزيرة العربيّة، ومعظم ما يُذكر في تلك القصائد نجده أمامنا، وفي أحاديث كبار السن، وموروثنا الشفهي. لذلك، أعدّ هذا الكتاب إعادة قراءة للشعر العربي قبل الإسلام في ضوء منظور جديد ورؤية مختلفة، وهو ليس إلّا خطوة أرجو أن تتبعها خطوات لإعادة فهم القصيدة التي أُغلقت عن الدرس العلمي بإجابات لم يكن كثيرٌ منها يسير في جادّة الصواب.
