يشكل هذا الكتاب محاولة لبيان إمكانية الإستفادة من منهج النقد عند المحدّثين في حقل التاريخ الإسلامي، وحدود الإستفادة هذه، يتوقف - بلا شك - دراسة مقارنة بين الروايتين الحديثية والتاريخية، وهو ما يقوم به مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور محي الدين حبوش، بدءاً بالعهد النبوي، وانتهاءً إلى القرن الثامن الهجري، إلى عصر الحافظ المؤرخ إبن كثير - ولهذه الغاية توزعت الدراسة على ثلاثة أبواب تنطوي على فصول ومباحث عدة، تبدأ بفصل تمهيدي يتضمن تعريفات إصطلاحية، والعلاقة بين الحديث والخبر التاريخي، يتبع ذلك الباب الأول ويدور حول نشأة الرواية وتقييدها بالكتابة سواء كانت الحديثية أو التاريخية - مراحلها ومناهجها وتقنياتها. أما الباب الثاني فهو قراءة في بنية الرواية (عرض وموازنة) ويبحث في إسناد الرواية، ومتن الرواية ومصادرها، ونتائج الموازنة وفيه يذكر المؤلف مدى التزام الباحثين بمنهج إسناد الرواية، ورجال الإسناد جرحاً وتعديلاً، والتوافق والإختلاف في المتن وأثره في الرواية. ويأتي الباب الثالث والأخير في نقد الرواية (عرض وموازنة) ويتتبع فيه المؤلف نشأة النقد وتطوره عند المحدّثين، ومنهجهم ودوافعهم، ومثله عن النقد في الرواية التاريخية: نشأته عند المؤرخين ومنهجهم ودوافعن في النقد وأثر ذلك على المادة الروائية.
