عنوان الكتاب يدل على مضمونه ، ويأخذ بيد قارئه إلى مكنونه ، إنها أبجدية النقد الذاتي ، إنها ألف باء الحوار ، إنها وقفة مع الذات لبحث تصحيح آلية التفكير ، آلية طرح الأفكار ومناقشتها ، آلية إصدار الأحكام على الآخرين . لا بد أن نخرج من القوقعة التي حبسنا أنفسنا بها ؛ لننظر بعين العقل إلى شمولية هذا الدين ، وصلاحيته لكل زمان ومكان كما أراده الله ؛ فإما أن نحسن الغرس ، فإن وفقنا ، وإلا . . فلا نكون من المخربين . وكتابنا هذا في نقده الذاتي لتياري الصوفية والسلفية . . من الكتب الرائدة في الدعوة إلى الوسطية المجانبة للغلو والتقصير ، فهو بعد أن يعرض أفكار الجانبين يقف موقف الطبيب العدل المسلم الناصح في توصيف المرض ووصف العلاج ؛ فهو لا يريد صوفية تغرق في بحار الادعاءات ، ولا سلفية تتحجر في كهوف التشكيك والاتهامات . قال المؤلف رحمه الله في مقدمة كتابه : ( فنحن وإن كنا لسنا في مقام من يسدي النصح أو يتولى الإرشاد ، بل ونعترف بأننا أولى مَنْ تُوجه إليهم النصيحة ، ويؤخذ بأيديهم ونواصيهم إلى الخير . . لكننا مع ذلك لا نرى مانعاً يمنع المقصِّر من قول الحق إذا علمه ، ومن بذل النصيحة إذا وجبت وتعينت ؛ لذلك فإننا نوجِّه هذه النصائح إلى أنفسنا أولاً ، ثم إلى إخواننا المسلمين ثانياً . . . ) . ولقد اختار المؤلف علاج أفكار هذين التيارين ؛ لما في اختلافهما من الخطر العظيم فقال : ( إن الاختلاف بين السلفية والصوفية بشكله الموجود اليوم هو أخطر الخلافات العقائدية بين المسلمين ، والتي تهدد وحدتهم . . . ) . ولربما تفاقم الجدال حتى يصل في كثير من الأحيان إلى تكفير وتفسيق وتبديع الطرف الآخر ، ومن ثم يصل النقاش إلى درجة لا ترضي أحداً ؛ ولذلك قام المؤلف رحمه الله تعالى بوضع قواعد تمهيداً لهذا الموضوع ، ثم جمع المسائل التي يدور حولها الخلاف ، وسلط عليها الأضواء ؛ ليقوم النقد الذاتي بفحصها في كلا الطرفين وإقرار الحق منها ونبذ الباطل ، ومن ثم يصل المجتمع إلى نقطة الوسط الواقعة بين غلو هؤلاء وتفريط هؤلاء .
