وفي هذا العمل تقدم الروائية قراءتها النقدية للواقع الإجتماعي والحياة الإجتماعية في تنوعها المطرد في مشهد يترافق فيه الديني مع السياسي لنشهد معها تعقيدات المجتمع السوداني، التي لها خصوصية تميزها عن بقية البلدان العربية، وخصوصاً مسألة العلاقة بين الشماليين والجنوبيين.
ومن خلال نسيج درامي - إنساني في متشابك مع زمن الرواية تغوص الروائية في مسألة شائكة وهي علاقة شمال السودان بجنوبه، من خلال قصة عائلة الحاج قسم السيد، الذي جاء بشاب سوداني جنوبي ادعى أنه ابن أخيه، وأسكنه عنده وسط بناته الثلاث، الأمر الذي أثار حفيظة الأم الحاجة علوية، كما أثار ألسنة الناس التي لم ترحم جوزيف من خلال نعتها إياه بــ"العبد"... ثم تتوالى إلى الأحداث حتى نكتشف أن جوزيف هذا ليس سوى ابن الحاج قسم السيد!!...
"زمن الموانع"... عالم غني ومفاجئ بتناقضاته، رُسمت شخوصه بحذاقة وبلغة أدبية آسرة لمجتمع متعدد الأوجه للعنصرية، وأحياناً زئبقي لا تستثني منه "ميرغني" حتى المواضيع الفقهية...
