نظر أبو العلاء في كل جوانب الحياة ليجد الفساد ضاربًا فيها بجرانه، متعمقًا في كل ناحية من نواحي المجتمع، المرأة المسلمة أضحت متاعًا رخيصًا، والكتاب والشعراء باعوا أقلامهم للطغاة الظالمين، والناس في محنة حقيقية.
عاش أبو العلاء النصف الثاني من القرن الرابع الهجري والنصف الأول من القرن الخامس الهجري ليرى هذه الحقائق المروعة، وليذق هو أيضًا مرارة الفقر، وذل الحاجة التي اضطرته إلى الهجرة من المعرة إلى بغداد ليعود مجرجرًا ثوب الخيبة.
هذه الحقائق الموضوعية والذاتية جعلت أبا العلاء المعري يتخذ موقفًا إيجابيًا من المجتمع، ولم يصبح رهين المحبسين بمعنى أنه فقد كل صلته بالحياة العامة، فلقد وفد عليه التلاميذ من كل أقطار الأرض وكانت له مكانته وكلمته الأولى في مجتمعه الصغير.
وقد درس الدارسون حياة أبي العلاء وعصره، ومروا مرورًا عابرًا على دوره الإيجابي تجاه قضايا ذلك العصر. وقد عولت في دراستي هذه على تأمل تراث أبي العلاء شعرًا ونثرًا، ولقد حظى تراثه بعناية الناشرين والمحققين، ثم تناولت عصره بالدراسة التاريخية والعقيدية والفلسفية لبيان التأثر والتأثير بين الشاعر وأفكار مجتمعه.
