على قاعدة الإختلاف في النظر إلى الحروب الصليبية بين أهل الشرق والغرب يبحث د. "أحمد حطيط" في كتابه هذا تأثير النظام الفيودالي الذي طبقه الفرنج في الشرق على واقع السكان المحليين في ظل هذا النظام في لبنان. (الفيودالي هو تنظيم إقتصادي – إجتماعي وسياسي ظهر في أوربا خلال العصر الوسيط وتميز باختفاء مفهوم الدولة والمواطنة وانتشار الأعراف والتقاليد والعادات التي سادت بين الإقطاعي والأقنان المرتبطين بالأرض).
وللإحاطة بموضوع الدراسة أكثر يقسم الكاتب كتابه هذا إلى خمسة فصول، بالإضافة إلى مقدمة وخاتمة. في الفصل الأول يتناول الباحث ظروف انطلاق حركة الفرنج إلى الشرق إلى إقامة المملكة اللاتينية في بيت المقدس. وفي الفصل الثاني يدرس الباحث جغرافية المناطق اللبنانية وتوزعها على دويلات الفرنج، وفي الفصل الثالث خصصه لدراسة ماهية النظام الفيودالي، ومكانة الكنيسة في ظل هذا النظام. وتعرّض الباحث في الفصل الرابع للأوضاع الإقتصادية والإجتماعية للجماعات السكانية اللبنانية / الطوائف في ظل النظام الفيودالي. أما الفصل الخامس والأخير عالج فيه أسباب النزوح والهجرة والتبشير والإمتيازات الأجنبية.
دراسة هامة سعى مؤلفها إلى جلاء الغموض الذي ما يزال يحيط بمسألة دقيقة ومعقدة من تاريخ لبنان، ومقاربة حقائقها التاريخية بعيداً عن الأساطير المروية والأطروحات الإيديولوجية – الطائفية. فأفلح الكاتب في تعميق وعينا بهذه المرحلة الدقيقة من تاريخ لبنان ...
