- وداعاً، يجب أن أغادر الآن. حملت مشترياتها وانصرفت. تابع سيرها مبتسماً بسخرية، وقال لنفسه: - مشهد آخر، وبعض المال كفيل بإخضاعك مجدداً. سار خلفها، أسرعت إلى شقتها، فتحت بابها بعصبية، أقحمت نفسها مع أول انفراج الباب، قصدت حجرة نومها، ألقت نظرة من نافذتها إلى الشارع، بيل يجلس على مقعد حجري فوق الرصيف. زفرت بحنق: - مسرحية بالية لا تجدي أيها الأبله. ظلت ربع ساعة تروح وتجيء بين سريرها والنافذة، ترقب بيل المثبّت بالمقعد، صرخت أخيراً: - هذا لا يُطاق. أخذت تركل الأثاث من حولها، ثم قذفت بنفسها على السرير، حدّقت في السقف برهة، تناولت سماعة الهاتف واتصلت بالفندق الذي تعمل به. طلبت صديقتها التي تعمل هناك، تحدثت معها مدة ليست بالقصيرة، ثم اتصلت بأوربية التي سمعت صوتها على الطرف الآخر بعد رنة واحدة: - نعم. - أين أنتِ؟ لماذا لم تأتِ حتى الآن؟
