منذ السطور الأولى لهذه اليوميات النادرة، والتي تعد اليوم من أهم المذكرات في تاريخ البحرين السياسي المعاصر، ولكونها تروي لأول مرة يوميات منفى بحريني، نلاحظ تلك المرارة التي يشعر بها "الشملان" في أيام الاعتقال الأولى والسجن البغيض، والإحباط الكبير الذي انغرس في قلوبهم، كزعماء من عدم حدوث أية مظاهر احتجاج ولو بسيطة من الناس الذي ناضلوا طوال الوقت من أجلهم!
ويروي "الشملان" بالتفاصيل والأسماء والأماكن كل ما حدث لهم في تلك الأيام القاسية حتى لحظة ركوبهم البارجة الحربية البريطانية التي كانت في انتظارهم في ميناء الجفير البحري.
حتى في عرض البحر وطوال الرحلة الطويلة التي أخذتهم من البحرين إلى جزيرة سانت هيلانه في جنوب المحيط الأطلسي التي تبعد عن أقرب ميناء في غرب أفريقيا حوالي 1140 ميلاً وتبعد عن البرازيل حوالي 2000 ميل وعن رأي الرجاء الصالح 1700 ميل، طوال الرحلة لم يتوقف "الشملان" عن تدوين يومياته في الباخرة على الدفتر الصغير، فقد كان يتذكر كل شيء.
أما وقد مضى نصف قرن بالضبط على هذه المذكرات النادرة من تاريخ البحرين، وخمسون عاماً على منفى سانت هيلانه، فأرجو في نهاية هذه المقدمة أن تقرأ هذه اليوميات الهامة القراءة التي تستحقها، قراءة تجعلها عبرة أكثر من ذكرى، وفرصة للتأمل أكثر منها وقتاً للذكريات. وقراءة لا تثير الشجون وإنما تنعش الآمال بمستقبل أفضل للبحرين. لقد عاش "عبد العزيز الشملان" في بلاده والمنافي حراً ومناضلاً، ومات كما كان حياً طاهراً وعزيزاً.
