هذا الكتاب يتتبع تطور الخطاب الإسلامي في إيران على مدى قرن كامل، بدءاً من الثورة الدستورية (المشروطة) مطلع القرن العشرين؛ وصولاً إلى العقد الأول من القرن الحادي والعشرين؛ في محاولة لتفسير الأسباب التي أدت إلى أن يشكل الإيرانيون ذوو التوجهات الإسلامية وحدهم النظام الاجتماعي-السياسي الجديد، إثرَ ثورة عام 1979، من دون أي تأثير لأي من مكونات المجتمع الإيراني الأخرى التي أسهمت في إطاحة نظام الشاه. ويقارب المؤلف الموضوع، من خلال دراسة أفكار الناشطين الإسلاميين وسياساتهم في إيران، ممن يصنفهم في أربعة أجيال، هي: الإحيائيون، والثوريون، والإسلامويون، والاستعاديون أو ما بعد الإسلامويين. ويقوم المؤلف باستعراض شامل وعميق، لطَيْف واسع من القادة والمفكرين الدينيين الذين أسهموا في صوغ الخطاب الإسلامي في إيران، وتشكيل أجياله، والتأثير في سياساته، سواء كانوا راحلين؛ مثل: حائري وبروجردي وخميني ومنتظري وطالقاني ومطهري وبازركان وشريعتي، أو أحياء؛ مثل: كديور وسروش وشبستري وحجاريان. والحق أنه قلَّ أن يظفر القارئ العربي بمرجع مهم كهذا؛ لا لفهم الخلفيات التاريخية والأصول النظرية للوضع السياسي الإيراني ما بعد الثورة فحسب، بل لتفسير تاريخ إيران الفكري المعـاصر أيضاً. والكـتاب يمتاز بأن مؤلفه لم ينطـلق مـن رؤيـة استـشراقية أو إسقاطية، شأن الكثير من الأدبيات الغربية التي تقارب الموضوع الإيراني؛ فإن يكن حالياً أستاذاً للعلوم السياسية في كلية العلوم الإنسانية بجامعة كارلتون في أوتاوا، فقد درَّس سابقاً في جامعة طهران وفي الأكاديمية الإيرانية للفلسفة، ويتبدى من خلال هذا العمل، معرفته الواسعة بالمناهج (الغربية) الحديثة، وبالثقافة والتجربة الإيرانيتين، معاً.
