"المرآة والتخييل" كتاب جديد للدكتور عواد علي يشتمل على مقاربات في المسرح العربي ولا سيما المسرح العراقي الذي اطلع على تجاربه أكثر من اطلاعه على غيرها من التجارب المسرحية العربية، حيث كان، ولا يزال، نص لوركا المشتعل "بيت برنارد ألبا" كما يسميه جواد الأسدي، هو الأقرب إلى أذهان المخرجين وقلوبهم من نصوصه الأخرى بسبب الإستبداد السياسي الثقيل الذي ما انفك يهيمن على حياة العراقيين منذ جلجامش إلى الآن. وفي هذا الإطار يعرض المؤلف لتجربة جواد الأسدي المسرحية (نساء السكسو .. فون) الذي أعاد إخراجه في مسرحه الخاص (مسرح بابل) ببيروت كما يسلط الضوء على مقاربة عواطف نعيم للنص المذكور عبر مستويين هما: بنية الحضور وبنية الغياب، ويشير إلى جملة قرائن في نص لوركا ونص جواد الأسدي ومقاربته الإخراجية، .. كما يتحدث المؤلف عن مسرحة قصائد محمود درويش، مشيراً إلى أن المسرح العربي استوحى العديد من قصائد درويش، ومن بواكير هذه التجارب مثلاً مسرحية "جواز سفر" إعداد وإخراج قاسم محمد عام 1972، بالإضافة إلى مبادرات أخرى.
إلى ذلك، يقدم المؤلف في هذا الكتاب دراسة مهمة في ملحمة جلجامش فيقرأها من وجهة نظر مسرحية، وبالتحديد من خلال رواية لطيفة الدليمي (عالم النساء الوحيدات) الصادرة عام 1986، فيرى أن الدليمي تابعت في هذا النص الحضور النمطي والمحدد للشخصيات النسوية في ملحمة جلجامش، فعملت على ابتداع شخصيات ثانوية لترى الصراع التراجيدي، مع مفهوم البطولة الذي تقدمه الملحمة بمساره الكلاسيكي، فكان الجميع أبطالاً، بهذا المعنى أو ذاك.
تتعدد المقاربات المسرحية في هذا العمل الرائد لتبلغ ثمانية عشر قراءة ومعالجة درامية نذكر منها: "نساء السكسو..فون: صورة الوطن في انزلاقه إلى الهاوية" ، "بلا عنوان: الإغتصاب الرمزي وخيار التحدي" ، "حلم اسمه ليلة حب: شكسبير بثياب الفرحة" ، "الليالي السومرية: تفكيك الحضور النسوي في ملحمة جلجامش" ، "الأقنعة: تجربة رائدة في مسرح الصورة" ، "هبوط عشتار إلى بغداد: إله الخصب في قبضة المارينز" ، "رامبو في المسرح العربي" ، "مسرحية إبن رشد" لمحمد الغزي: الحكمة في مواجهة القوة" (...) وعناوين أخرى.
