تعرف معاجم اللغة الاسم بأنه لفظ يطلق على شيء لتعيينه وتمييزه عن غيره. ويفترض أن يكون لكل شيء اسماً أو رمزاً أو على الأقل رقماً ليعرف به، ومن ذلك أن للأماكن أسماء تعرف بها، ويتم التعامل معها بعلم أسماء الأماكن name-place أو علم الأسماء الجغرافية Toponymy حيث يعني الشق topo من هذا المصطلح اليوناني مكان place، ويعني كلمة onyma اسم name.
ولدراسة الأسماء الجغرافية أهمية كبيرة تكاد -إن لم تكن فعلاً- تتصل بكل مناحي الحياة، إذ ترد في معظم الوثائق الشخصية للفرد كبطاقة إثبات الشخصية وجواز السفر وعقد الزواج، وكذلك الشهادات المدرسية والجامعية وغيرها، حيث تبين البلدة الأصلية ومكان الولادة وما نحو ذلك. وتتداول وسائل الإعلام من صحف ومجلات وإذاعات مرئية ومسموعة أسماء أماكن الأحداث ومواقعها، حيث تبعث بمراسليها ومصوريها لبث تقاريرهم، ويدرس الطلاب التاريخ والجغرافيا بما فيها من أسماء جغرافية متنوعة. وللأسماء الجغرافية جذورها التاريخية، وما تشير إليه، فهي دليل هوية وانتماء لا بد من معرفته جيداً والتأكيد عليه وتعزيزه على الدوام لكل الأجيال، لتكتمل صورة تاريخ الوطن وحضارته في نفوس وضمائر الجميع.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى التعريف بمعاني أسماء الشمس والقمر، والكواكب السيارة، والقارات والمحيطات والجبال والجزر والأنهار، والأسماء الرسمية لدول العالم، وأسماء عواصمها، وإلقاء الضوء على معانيها، هذا إضافة إلى طرافة الموضوع، وقد يجد القارئ بعض الأسماء الغريبة فعلاً في أصولها ومعانيها، وهذه المعلومات هي حصيلة هواية استمرت بضع سنوات من تجميع لتفسير أسماء جغرافية ومعانيها كما وردت في دوائر المعارف (الموسوعات) والكتب المتخصصة والعامة، إضافة لما أوردته بعض المواقع على شبكة الإنترنت.
