الكتاب الذي نقدمه بهذه السطور: "بوليفار" هو إحدى الدراسات التاريخية التي خطها قلم خوسيه انريكي رودو، ويعتبر من أجمل صفحات إنتاجه وأروعها. وكان رودو قد نشر هذه الدراسة لأول مرة في سنة 1904، ثم أعاد نشرها مع مجموعة أخرى من الدراسات جعل عنوانها "شرفة بروسبيرو" وهو كتاب طبع أكثر من مرة، وإحدى طبعاته هي التي ظهرت في مدريد (اسبانيا) سنة 1915، وقد كان بوليفار في نظر خوسيه انريكي رودو هو المثل الأعلى للبطل، وهو يرى فيه أفضل نموذج إنساني ظهر في أمريكا الناطقة باللغة الإسبانية على طول تاريخ القارة، وقد ألح رودو على هذا المعنى وكرره في كثير من مقالاته ودراساته الأخرى.
ونحن نرى في هذه الدراسة عن طريق الترجمة العربية التي نقدمها لقراء العالم العربي لأول مرة مدى دقة التحليل الذي يعرضه لنا رودو لشخصية بطل تحرير أمريكا اللاتينية وجمال الأسلوب الذي تميز به ذلك العرض، ولو أن الترجمة مهما كانت لا يمكن أن تصل إلى روعة الأصل. وطبيعي أننا لن نجد في هذه الدراسة ترجمة مفصلة لحياة سيمون بوليفار، إذ أن تفاصيل حياة البطل وأحداثها معروفة لقرائه الأمريكيين وهذا هو ما حملنا على أن نتبع هذا التقديم بعرض سريع لحياة بوليفار.
