تعمل التربية على تحقيق النمو المتكامل بكل جوانب الشخصية الإنسانية، وهذا النمو يتم في إطار اجتماعي ومن ثم يكون للتربية طرفان: أحدهما الفرد والأخر، المجتمع والتربية تعمل على تحقيق التواؤم والتكيف بين الطرفين. والمدرسة كمؤسسة تعليمية ذات تأثير كبير على تكوين الفرد وتوجيه سلوكه وتعديل مواقفه واتجاهاته، ففي المدرسة يتعلم الطالب المزيد من المعايير الاجتماعية في شكل نظم، كما يتعلم أدوارًا اجتماعية جديدة فيتعلم الحقوق والواجبات وضبط الانفعالات والتوفيق بين حاجاته وحاجات الغير كما يتعلم التعاون والانضباط.
ولذلك فإن المدرسة يجب أن تؤكد على صلة الفرد بالمجتمع الذي يعيش فيه، وأن تعد هذا الفرد ليكون مواطنًا صالحًا لنفسه ولمجتمعه من خلال إكسابه عادات مثل تحمل المسئولية– التفكير العلمي وإكسابه عددًا من الاتجاهات والقيم كالولاء والانتماء للوطن ومساعدته على الممارسة الفعلية لهذه العادات والاتجاهات حتى تكون موجهات لسلوكه في المستقبل. ولهذا جاء هذا الكتاب.
