تعتبر قصة جوزيف أندروس (أوديسة) وملحمة طاهرة بين الباحثين عن منزلة رفيعة، وهى قصة صاخبة عن خادم وسيم إلى حد كبير لكنه مبتلى بالفقر، وهو تحت رحمة عالم من اللصوص، وأرملة من النبلاء، وصاحب الفندق الفظ فى معاملته وكان القس أدمس هو المرافق لجوزيف. وتظهر شجارات من خلال متاهات ساخرة، حيث يختلط عليه الأمر حينما يخطئ فى معرفة الهوية، لكن فى النهاية يحل هذا الخطأ. وتعتبر هذه القصة الحجر الأساسى لشكل القصة الخيالية، ومرآة تعكس ملامح القرن الثامن عشر، وملامح الحياة الريفية، وهى أيضاً مبالغة عن التكلف الأخلاقى والتفاهات.
