هذه الرواية تعتبر من الأدب الإنجليزى الكلاسيكى، كتبها الروائى الإنجليزى الشهير "أنتونى ترولوب" ونشرت عام 1864... هى فى مجملها تتحدث عن المشكلة الخالدة المعروفة على مستوى العالم، مشكلة "زواج البنات".
حين تقرأ هذه الرواية تشعر أن أحداثها تصلح لأن تحدث وقائعها فى واحد من مجتمعاتنا الشرقية الحالية، ولكن المجتمع الغربى عموماً، فى وقتنا الحالى، قد تحرر بشكل غير عادى، وأصبحت الفتاه (فى معظم الأحيان) حرة فى أن تستقل بمعيشتها مع صديقها بمجرد أن تبلغ السادسة عشرة من عمرها، وربما يفكر الحبيبان فى الزواج بعدما ينجبان الابن الثالث.
لقيت هذه الرواية إقبالاً كبيراً عام 1990 فى كل إنجلترا، عندما صرح رئيس مجلس الوزراء البريطانى فى ذلك الحين "جون ميجور"، أن هذه الرواية هى أحب رواية بالنسبة إليه قرأها بلغته الأم.
كتب "أنتونى ترولوب" أكثر من 50 رواية بالإضافة إلى العديد من الكتب غير الروائية والعديد من الترجمات، وجنى كمن ذلك ثروة طائلة، وتوفى عام 1882.
