يعد كتاب "المشترك وضعاً والمعترف صقعاً" لمؤلفه الشيخ الإمام شهاب الدين أبي عبد الله ياقوت بن عبد الله الحموي مولىً والبغدادي منشأً من عيون التراث العربي، الخاصة بأدب الرحلات. ولكنه يختلف عن غيره بأن مؤلفه دعمه بالشواهد من القرآن والحديث. فهو يشير إلى آيات الخالق وبراهين قدرته المنتشرة على الأرض، لذا فإن قراءة الرحلات والإطلاع على وصف البلدان فيه فائدة كبرى وموعظة حسنة. وياقوت الحموي كان ملتزماً فيه بتدوين ملاحظاته أثناء أسفاره، حيث لم يهمل التفصيل في أهمية المعلومات الجغرافية من الناحية العملية، فيسوق للقارىء أمثلة وشواهد يحدد من خلالها مواقع بعض المواضع.
وفي هذا الإطار، يضع المستشرق فردينان وستنفلد تفصيلاً لهذا المعجم فيعرض للمواقع الجغرافية التي أشار إليها ياقوت، وكثيراً ما يصطحب الأخبار والأساطير المتعلقة بها. وإذا جاء ذكر الموضع في القرآن أو الحديث سيقت في ذلك الشواهد، وإذا كان قد فتحه المسلمون فيعرض لتاريخ هذا الفتح، كما يورد أسماء كبار علمائه وخاصة الفقهاء وأهل الحديث وأسماء أساتذتهم وتلامذتهم. وبخلاف هذا، يورد وصف ياقوت للأمكنة والمدن التي زارها وتفاصيل دقيقة عن الأبنية المختلفة والقلاع والمرافىء، ويقف أيضاً ليصف عادات وأخلاق القبائل والشعوب كما لا يهمل الكلام عن صنوف العجائب في البلاد النائية. هذا ويتخلل العرض ضروب من الحكايات الطريفة النكات والقصص مع مختارات واسعة من الشعر.
