يشتمل هذا الكتاب على مجموعة من الابحاث القيمة في موضوع علم اللغات وأصول تعليم اللغة العربية لغير الناطقين بها , وكذلك يتضمن مراجعة مفصلة ودقيقة لمعظم الكتب المنشورة المعدة لتعليم العربية . وتشكل هذه الابحاث في مجملها تغطية لبعيدين : احدهما البعد التاريخي , فقد تناول المؤلف بعض هذه الإبحاث في اللغة العربية ونظرية تعلمها عند ابن خلدون والماوردي وغيرهما , وقد حاول أن يجلي هذا البعد التاريخي تجلية واضحة مربوطة الأسباب بالحاضر , حتى ليحس القارىء أن الحواجز قد انطوت أمام نور كاشف يصل الماضي بالحاضر .
وأما البعد الثاني فيتمثل بالبعد الجغرافي الواسع , كصورة افريقيا في المناهج العربية وتركيا في المناهج العربية . كل هذه في دراسات تحاول أن تسبر عمق المسائل اللغوية , مربوطة بالبعد الثقافي لها. ومن المواضيع التي تطرق إليها هذا الكتاب على سبيل المثال لا الحصر : القراءة الحرة واستخدام المعجم والمفردات الشائعة في العربية ومشكلة البحث في تعليم اللغة الاجنبية واساسيات العربية على مستوى التراكيب والازدواجية اللغوية والمصطلح البصري والكوفي في المعاجم العربية والفصحى والعامية وغيرها.
