هذه الرواية تعبر عن المجتمع والشباب المصري وتطلعاته، في فترة ما قبل ثورة 1952 وما بعدها، وكيف يحتدم الخلاف بين الثوار والإخوان المسلمين، فيقبض على البطل معهم دون ذنب اقترفه، ويلقى في السجن، فتتخلى عنه خطيبته، فيصدم وتتزعزع قيمه ومبادؤه، وعندما يفرج عنه يبدأ رحلة البحث عن الحقيقة، منتهجاً أسلوباً آخر في الحياة، يهدف إلى تحقيق الحياة الكاملة، الزاخرة بالعمق والدراسة، وكذلك اللهو والمتعة، فيحاول الكتابة ومزاولة الفن، والرياضة، هذا بالإضافة إلى الشخصيات الأخرى، وصراعاتها مع الواقع وتأثير ذلك على نفسيتها وتصرفاتها، كما تمثل الرواية المثالية في أداء الواجب وفي الحب وفي الشرف والنزاهة، وتصور أيضاً معاناة الموظف محدود الدخل، وكذلك انحرافات المجتمع وظواهر الشهوة والجنس، وتحتوي الرواية على أبعاد دينية، وفلسفية، ونفسية، واجتماعية، وسياسية، وفنية.
