في دراستنا هذه نريد أن نعالج مشكلة واحدة تتعلق بنصوص المعلقات وما حدث عليها من تغيير وتحريف ما بين أول شرح لها قدمه أبو بكر الأنباري (ت 328هـ) وآخر شرح لها قدمه أبو زكريا الخطيب التبريزي (ت 502هـ).
وقد أتعب اسم المعلقات الرواة قديماً والباحثين حديثاً، فذكروا آراء مختلفة، ولعلَّ أشهرها أنها علقت على الكعبة لشهرتها وأصحاب هذا الرأي يضمون عدداً من علماء اللغة والرواة إبتداء بإبن الكلبي (204هـ) وإنتهاء بالبغدادي (ت 1092هـ) ولقد أجمل الباحثون المعاصرون كثيراً مما يخص هذا النقد الخارجي حول هذه القصائد، منهم الدكتور محمود عبد الله الجادر في بحثه "معلقات العرب دراسة في مواصفات الإختيار" فلا حاجة إلى إعادة ذكرها مرة أخرى، والذي يهمنا نحن في الأساس الخلاف في رواية نص القصائد الجاهلية حيث يقدم إشارات سريعة إلى المصادر التي سوف نعتمد عليها في هذه الدراسات، والخلافات التي جرت عليها في عدد أسماء الشعراء وعدد أبيات القصائد وتسلسل المعلقات في هذه الشروح.
