والشافية هي عبارة عن جمع مختصر لما يندرج تحت ما سمِّي بعلم التصريف المستنبط من كلام العرب، والذي راح علماء العربية يقيسون عليه كثيراً من المفردات التي لم يتكلّم بها الأعراب لإعانة أبناء العروبة على جعلهم قادرين على الإبتكار والتجديد في المضمار اللغوي.
كان للخليل بن أحمد أثره العظيم في علوم العربية التي تطوّرت واستقلّت فيما بعد، أكان ذلك في علم العروض، أو النحو، أو البلاغة، أو اللغة، او التصريف، فقد أوتي الرجل موهبة لمح خفايا تلك اللغة؛ فراح ينثر آراءه في كتاب سيبويه أو كتاب العين المنسوب إليه تاركاً لمن تلاه توسيع تلك المعلومات، فعملوا على تطويرها، كلّ في مجالاته التي برع فيها، فاستقلّت تلك العلوم؛ ومنها بطبيعة الحال علم التصريف.
ومن كتب التصريف التي وصلتنا "الشافية في علم التصريف" لجامعه جمال الدين أبي عمرو عثمان بن عمر الدَّويني النحوي المعروف بابن الحاجب.
