لقد احتل مفهوم الحوار عبر العصور المكانة المركزية في كثير من الآراء الإنسانيّة، وكانت تعاليم سقراط هي البدايات الأولى التي اعتبرت أن الحوار يمثل المكانة المركزية في التراث الفكريّ الإنسانيّ، حيث أشارت تعاليم سقراط إلى أن عملية التساؤل في البحث عن الحقائق، وعملية الإجابة عنها، تعدان معاً تمثيلاً إتصالياً خارجياً لعملية تفكير حوارية، تبنى في أساسها على الحدس، وعلى عملية النقد، وإعادة بناء الأفكار.
يستند الحوار بكليته على المحاور أولاً، الذي ينبغي أن يدعم ذاكرته بقدرة الإسترجاع الذهني، الذي تمكنه من عملية ربط مفاصل الحوار، فيعود قادراً على إستثارة ذاكرته الصورية التخيلية، والتي بدورها تساعد المحاور على الرؤية والتبصر، ومن ثم الفهم والإستيعاب والإسترجاع.
والحوار بكُليّته يحتاج إلى يقظة ووعي من قبل الطرف الأول وهو المحاور، لما يوظفه من عمليات عقلية تكون ملقاة على عاتقه، فمعرفة المحاور للفكرة التي يحاور فيها، ووعيه بها، ووعيه للعلاقات التي تربط الأفكار حتى لا يتعارض في أقواله، ووعيه أيضاً لما يوجد في ذاكرته من معارف وخبرات سابقة لموضوع الحوار الذي يجريه مع الشخص الآخر، كل ذلك يساعده في مهمته التي هي رهن معالجتها لتنتهي إلى أداء متقن إلى حد ما.
ولعل الجديد في هذا الكتاب هي دعوة المؤلف لكل من الأطراف التي تمثل العملية الحوارية إلى توظيف العمليات العقلية، في أثناء معالجة المهمة الحوارية؛ فتزداد قدرة الأطراف المشاركة في العملية الحوارية على مواصلة الإنتباه وإستمراره، وتقوى مهارة المحاور في صياغته للأسئلة، وطرحها وإختيار الوقت المناسب لها، وتقديم التعديل المناسب لها.
