تعد المسألة الاقتصادية ـ بشكل عام ـ أهم ما يعنى به الناس في عالمنا اليوم، وتتبوأ مكان الصدارة في قائمة اهتماماتهم، ويرجع ذلك إلى:
1ـ الدافع الفطري الذي أودعه اللّه تعالى في نفس كل إنسان، من حب المال والسعي إلى جمع المزيد منه للتمتع والتلذذ والتباهي به.
2ـ طغيان النزعة المادية على معظم البشر أفراداً وأمماً، من جرّاء الثورة الصناعية الحديثة، حيث نشط الناس لجمع الثروات وضاعفوا من سعيهم ونشاطهم وتنافسهم في الحقل الاقتصادي.
ولكن وجد في ميدان هذا التنافس، من لم يحالفه الحظ، ووقع في براثن الفقر والحرمان والبؤس والشقاء، فكانت الثورة الصناعية ذات أثرين متناقضين، فسعد بها أناس وشقي بها آخرون، واصطرعت هاتان الفئتان، فظهر من جراء هذا الصراع مذهبان اثنان هما:
المذهب الرأسمالي: وقد تبنى فكرة الحرية في كل شيء، وخصوصاً في المجال الاقتصادي، ودعا إلى نبذ التدخل في أنشطة الناس وإن كان ذلك التدخل من قبل الدولة.
والمذهب الماركسي: الذي مثل ردة الفعل للحرية الجامحة التي تبنتها الرأسمالية، فنادى بضرورة تدخل الدولة في أنشطة الناس بقوة، ودعا إلى فرض المزيد من القيود على حرية الفرد، والحد من نشاطه، إلى درجة أصبح فيها الفرد مكبلاً بهذه القيود، وصار يعمل لحساب الدولة.
وهكذا كانت مسألة الحرية الاقتصادية العامل الأهم والحاسم في ولادة هذين المذهبين، ومن ثمّ ظهرت مشكلة الحرية الاقتصادية وكثر الجدال فيها، فكان لزاماً على العلماء بيان موقف الإسلام من هذه المسألة ذات الخطورة الكبيرة، وصارت مثاراً لأسئلة كثيرة.
