التراث هو الوعاء الذي يستوعب تاريخ أيَّةِ أمةٍ من الأمم، وهو صَمَّامُ أمَانِها، يشكل الهوية، ويرسخ الثقافة، ويحقق الذات، ويعبِّر عن المجد والاصالة والعزة والإباء، ويرصد العادات والتقاليد... وبذَلِك يسهم في تسجيل حياة الأمة، ويروي معاناة الإنسان في هذه الحياة، وتفاعله معها في كل حالة من الحالات سواء في الأفراح أو الأتراح، لذلك كله هو سجل الأمة، يميزها عن غيرها من الأمم، ويفتح لها باباً تنطلق منه إلى العالمية.
وتعد الموصل (أم الربيعين) إحدى أقدم المدن في العالم، ممن لها تاريخ عريق وتراث ماثل للعيان، زاخر بالأحداث، حافل بالأمجاد، وهي من أهم مدن العراق وأجلّها شأناً، ومن أبرز الحواضر العربية عطاءً وحضوراً.
ووفاءً من المؤلف الدكتور سمير حديد لمدينته الموصل، رصد في كتابه هذا عدد من المحلات العريقة والمشاهد التراثية والسياحية في مدينة الموصل، وعاد إلى مفردات الحياة في خمسينيات القرن العشرين، وإلى أجواء التلاحم الشعبي والألفة بين الأسر الموصلية العريقة، والطقوس والتقاليد الفريدة الخاصة ليزيح الغبار عن معالم بارزة من هذه المدينة العريقة، من خلال وصف هذه المحلاَّت، خلال الفترة الممتدة: 1940- 1960م.
وعليه، يقع الكتاب في أربعة فصول مع مُقَدِّمة وقائمة بالمصادر تم إدراجها حسب الحروف الأبجدية، خصص الفصل الأول لعرض أسماء الموصل عبر الحقب الزمنية المنصرمة، والإصطياف في الموصل، وأيام مع نهر دجلة... ويتناول الفصل الثاني محلات الموصل: (حمام المنقوشة)، منطقة (الساعة)، محلة خزرج - محلة المشاهدة، وشارع الفاروق.
أما الفصل الثالث، فيتناول عدداً من الأكلات الموصلية التُراثية القديمة وهي: (البسطرمة - الكمي - الكِشْك - الكعوب - التِّين المُجفَّف - اللَّبن الخاثر - والقشفي - جُبْن البيزة - التوت والسُمَّاق - حلاوة الخضر - الجرزات الموصلية)، وأما الفصل الرابع والأخير ففيه من حقيبة الذكريات حديث عن: الإعدادية المركزية والدورة الخامسة لقسم الرياضيات في جامعة الموصل، وآخر عن المسبحة والزمن الجميل.
